Overall

This project is to explore the relationship between ceramic art and music. Fundamental to this research was a large number of psychological related to music and handmade pottery.

I was inspired by clay when making pottery. By utilising the Arduino I created a code to transform the clay to sound and showed it by an immersive installation.

Solution

Research

The benefits of handmade pottery and music

The art of pottery making is often described as having a therapeutic and relaxing effect. Our shaping process of kneading, pressing and pulling is very similar to the flow of sound

Design question

What if the clay could make a sound?

Design process

Case study

Artist Neil Mendoza's made electromechanical musical instrument produces sound by throwing stones into the air and hitting them to vibrate.

Artist uses a camera to detect the characteristics of different liquids and how they slowly change, turning these changes into sound.

By case studies, I decided to use the Arduino to create a code to transform the clay to sound, Different shapes correspond to different sounds.
